Developing Your Spiritual IQ
There Are Many Pathways To Attaining A Higher Spiritual IQ - An ancient saying originating from the Vedic tradition goes something like this: “There are a thousand paths to enlightenment. It doesn’t matter which one you take, as long as you get there.” Certainly, you can substitute “enlightenment” for whatever spiritual path appeals to you the most. For example, we might say, there are a thousand paths to “God,” or “spirituality” or “heaven.” The point is that there is no one, best way way to achieve a higher state of spiritual development.
It seems that almost every human being on the planet has a natural, internal urge to find deeper meaning. Also, people increasingly want more than just to “believe” in or "have faith" in something. They want “knowingness.” To actually know is more profound than to believe.
One of the “thousand” paths seekers select is to adopt a teacher, psychic guru or spiritual guide to help them find spirituality. A modernized term for guru might be “mentor" or “life coach.” But here again, it amounts to basically the same thing. People hope a life coach or psychic guide can get them on the fast track to an advanced state of spiritual realization.
There’s nothing wrong with working with a mentor or psychic guru, but the person you chose must be worthy figure who truly knows his or her stuff. It’s a painful truth that some self-appointed gurus are not all they claim to be. Charlatans abound. It’s up to each individual to decide how much trust they should place in a chosen mentor.
A psychic is a general term for a person who has a talent with ESP – extrasensory perception. A psychic medium, more specifically, uses his or her abilities to speak with those who have passed, or they channel nonphysical spirits, wise entities and beings.
In our modern world, finding the services of a psychic has never been easier – but also fraught with pitfalls. For example, one might log onto the Internet and search for “fortune teller online.” A fortune teller is similar or sometimes basically the same thing as a psychic. It’s a person with a special talent for providing insight about an individual’s future or life in general. It doesn’t make any difference if you’re using a fortune teller online or sitting across a table from one face to face with one. If the “fortune teller” truly has a psychic gift, he or she can provide guidance toward a more spiritual life.
It’s only common sense to keep in mind that not all psychics and fortune tellers are created equal. That’s why we say the consulting with such professionals comes with some pitfalls. Let’s face it – a lot of psychics and fortune tellers are scam artists. It’s up to each individual seeker to determine how much trust to put into any spiritual counselor.
That can be said of any spiritual tradition, however. We all know there are good priests and some bad ones. There are good and wise ministers and those not so good. There are deeply gifted rabbis and those that fall short. It’s true of all organized spiritual systems.
All this points to a universal truth: Seeking higher spiritual attainment is a difficult journey. We often take side-roads that are dead ends. Sometimes we wind up completely lost. But take heart. When you go down a wrong path, your effort is not forfeited -- you just need to start over. Mistakes are made along the way, and we learn valuable lessons because of them.
That’s the way it’s supposed to work. If it were easy to attain enlightenment or raise our spiritual IQ, it wouldn't be worth it. In fact, as any bona fide saint will tell you, it’s the suffering along the way that we learn from the most.
Finally, the subject of raising the spiritual IQ is never complete without mentioning perhaps the No. 1 method for doing so – meditation. Perhaps no other method of spiritual attainment is more universal than a regular, daily practice of some form of meditation.
Here again, there are many paths – Zen meditation, Transcendental Meditation (TM), Heart Rhythm Meditation (HRM), Yoga, Qi Gong and more. There's also a purely secular way to meditate by just sitting quietly, clearing your mind and focusing on your breathing.
How do you know which is best? The answer is: You don’t. No one can give you that answer. You just have to go with your heart or gut instinct, choose a method and try it. One thing you can be sure of, however. If you choose to meditate every day, you are at least trying something. Your journey on the spiritual path is moving forward.
